Drama Club

After school

The McDonough High School Drama Club, under the director of Mrs. Jana Heyl,  produces two major mainstage productions a year (open to anyone in the school for smaller roles)  and up to 4 smaller shows  (open to Thespians and students in Advanced Acting classes) every year.  The fall production is a straight play (non-musical) and the spring production is typically a musical production.  Before each production auditions are held to fill the acting and technical positions for the play.

Students who are active in theatre can become members of the school’s International Thespian Society, an honor society for students in high school theatre.  Recent plays our department has done include Cinderella, West Side Story, High School Musical, Zombie Prom, Les Miserables, Peter Pan, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Grease, A Night of Remembrance, and Disney’s Beauty and the Beast., High School Musical, Dracula and Seussical.  MHS DRAMA  also produced  the first full length production of playwright, Jonathan Rand in 2005.  The play, which was a comedy/mystery was entitled, Murder in the Knife Room and was published under Playscripts.com with our students listed in the front cover as the originators of the roles.

In addition to the productions, drama club also does face painting at the Charles County Fair, collects non-perishable food items for TOTS-EAT (Trick or Treat so Kids Can EAT) and takes annual trips to places like the Kennedy Center  or New York City.
